  1. Spacial awareness is non- existent

If you have ever had the delight of travelling on the Northern line during rush hour, you will know all too well what a pleasure it is. In fact, any tube line which travels through central London within peak times is despicably bad. Strangers will inevitably touch you, you will have sweaty armpits in your face – your hair may even get caught in someone else’s zip. If you are commute on the tube you learn to accept the fact that personal space disappeared years ago, into the horizon.

  1. Feeling HOT, HOT, HOT

Whether it is 10 degrees outside, or -10 the tubes are permanent furnaces. It’s like venturing into a glasshouse at the height of summer. This can make outfit choices severely challenging; do I bring a coat for after hours, you ask yourself – but then if it doesn’t get colder I’m stuck holding my jacket like a pleb? My advice is to always carry a bottle of cold water, and a cardigan (just in case as British weather is very much bi-polar).

  1. It’s also ICE, ICE baby

Aside from being blunderingly hot in the summer months, the tube is also pleasingly cold during the colder months. I’m almost certain that air-con is on during winter, but somehow malfunctions during the warmer months? This theory is also applicable to London buses.

  1. Fight for your right

If you live / get on the tube anywhere near the middle or end of a line. There is no way you are sitting down, nope. You, my friend, are standing uncomfortably until you reach your destination. It is literally a case of survival of the fittest, London tubes take no prisoners. Furthermore, I have realised when standing, if you move towards the centre of the carriage, you are more likely to get a seat – as people get off gradually, you will be in a prime position to nab their seat. Thank me later.

  1. Strike….a pose?

There will be several strikes throughout the year, despite you paying through your nose for TFL; apparently their workers need more money? So, on these particular days you will struggle to get to work, actually you probably will not be able to get to work whatsoever. Good luck explaining this to your boss.

BUT, despite all of these unfortunate elements, we still continue to pay over the odds for it, we still get where we need to (and pretty fast too by the way).

I honestly have not got my eyebrows shaped by a professional for around 2 years now. Yes I do shamelessly walk around with bushes on top of my eyelids, but I rock it so well. And I make those bushes look slick af. 

There are several reasons why this works in my favour, it has allowed my eyebrows to grow out naturally and it also saves me time and money. Eyebrows grow way too fast, spending £10 on a wax every 6 weeks is rather a lot of maintenance. 

So I decided to ditch the threading / waxing and go natural. Just me, my tweezers and the world. And it hasn’t worked out all too bad.. of course you need the correct products to give the illusion of perfect brows. 


Here’s what you need; 

1. Slanted tweezers, £8 

These will rapidly become your bffl. Follow your natural eye brow shape, and pluck out re growth every week – often a good idea to get your eyebrows threaded that one initial time to define shape. And thereafter, follow that shape. 

2. Kiko Milano full coverage concealer in 02, £7.50 

Using the slanted brush, you will conceal to your hearts content. Blending away imperfections and concealing your eyebrows all the way to brow fleekiness. When you have unruly regrowth, concealer is an absolute god send. 

3. NYX tame & frame tinted brow pomade, in 01 blonde, £6 

This is your filler, your eyebrow pencil and gel combined in one tiny pot that seems to last forever. (I’ve had this current one almost two years now eeek). Apply this with your eyebrow slanted brush and fill in as necessary. You don’t even have to be neat or precise, you have the concealer to clean up your mess. 

4. Kiko Milano eye make up brush in 204, £3.20 (on sale at the moment, normally £10.90) 

This brush has been my saviour the past two years. Use it to fill your brows, wipe clean and conceal the hell out of them.

How you can help friends who suffer with depression, MHAW 17

Depression is much like drowning. You are laying in a full bath of luke warm water, staring aimlessly at the ceiling. You don’t see the ceiling, you see nothing but blankness. You know you need to move, but all energy, all motivation has miraculously escaped your cold, fatigued body. You are cold. Depression is that point where you can’t move, you aren’t even mentally in the room. You are consumed by your own intruding dark thoughts. 

 I imagine depression as long black cloak, which is invisible for the most part. But when it wants to make itself known. It will make your entire world fall apart around you. 

Seeing as it’s mental health awareness week, and I have been viewing in the media that more and more young people are being diagnosed with depression / depressive disorders. I thought it was mandatory to try and help others understand what we go through, and how they can potentially help. Of course when it comes to mental health, there is no secret tablet that cures your condition. Because more often than not, there is external factors which alleviate the condition. 

For me, being a naturally bubbly person and suffering with depression on and off; It’s even more difficult because everyone always assumes you are fine. Oh you are strong and loud, you’ll get on with it. 

This isn’t always the case. 

Here are some tips to help if you have a friend who suffers; 

1. Check on them 

The one thing that really matters when someone is depressed is the feeling of isolation. Just messaging someone asking how they are can literally make their day. To you it’s a short message, to the disaffected person that can be seen as someone caring, reaching out. So do check up on your friends as regularly as you can. It helps. 

2. Patience is a virtue 

Be patient with depressed people. If they are having a bad day, they may not want to talk to you – don’t take anything personally. They may need time to get their thoughts together. 

3. Be there 

It sounds really patronising and obvious, but if any of your friends ever tell you they are depressed. Don’t assume it’s a one day thing and they will be fine next week. It could be potentially something they suffer with, on and off, for the rest of their lives. So try your hardest to be there for them as much as you can. Whether it be days out to distract them and get them out of the house – or phone calls where you just listen. It all helps in the grand scheme of things.

How to stay motivated and deal with rejection

I feel like after you leave university there is most definetly a lack of direction. And an innate need to find the perfect career right away. Even though we all know it’s going to take ample time, it can be difficult to hang in there. Especially if your current situation / job is making you want to give up on life altogether. 

Personally I continued to work full time after graduating, but even though I have been working (like a dog may I add) 58 hours a week and freelance writing in my spare time (you are right there sparse spare time when you work such long hours but if you have a passion, you simply WILL find time); I felt like a bum because I’m not doing a graduate job linked to my degree or what I have studied. I’m simply working a job to pay my bills, and that’s not what I want. 

So, de-motivated and lacking energy I decided to take charge; scouring job sites for hours on end. Applying for any job even remotely close to what I want to do long term. Spending hours on the phone to recruiters who may have had a suitable position – but I would need to first spend an hour in the evening proving myself to someone I didn’t know. But after all the hours and hours of tedious application. Comes the rejection stage. 

At one point I was receiving so many rejection emails that I was going to save them all, print them out and create a piece of monochrome,sassy art work. But the heart ache wouldn’t allow me to do so. I deleted them straight away, so that I wouldn’t get too disheartened. Even if your story is not the same as mine, we are all in different positions and stages of life. Rejection, unfortunately is something we will all need to deal with. And I think how you deal with it is important. It shows strength of character, it shows that you are not willing to give up, determination prevails and eventually you will be successful. 

I spent four long months applying like a mad woman, spending 100’s of pounds on attending interviews and missing work. But I did it. I got a job with a worthy title. The pay isn’t fantastic, but it’s a role I feel I deserve. 

So with all the rejection, hard work whilst maintaining a full time job.. how did I stay motivated? 

1. Never forget the end goal 

The mind is a strange place, and it can be easily distracted – often when you are attempting something very difficult in life your mind will convince you to try easier routes. Don’t even give in to the temptation. Remember your end goal and stick to it. Even if creating a mood board helps to motivate and inspire you, or writing may help to relieve pressure and share how you feel along the way. Whatever motivates you allow that to positively push you to continue down the difficult, but correct path for yourself. 

2. Surround yourself with positivity

I assure you there will be times where you will have emotional breakdowns. During these times you need strong support systems in order to uplift you, and help you keep going. Whether it be family you can speak to, friends you confide in, or simply crying down the phone to your boyfriend. Let out the frustration and listen to the ones who care for you. They know you will make it in the end, and it’s sometimes easier for them to see it because they aren’t the ones living it. They will remind you to stay positive. 

3. Deal with rejection effectively 

Everybody in the world gets rejected. But you know what, the most successful people in this world utilise it to push them further. Instead of letting rejection get them down, they use it in the opposite way and become even more motivated. Delete the rejection emails and letters, push them to the back of your mind and remind yourself that if this company has rejected you it wasn’t the right place for you anyway. Even after interviews if potential employers don’t even get back to you, just brush it off. Clearly you weren’t right for them. But you will be right for someone out there.

How to (try to) control your anxiety

At first you don’t even realise what is wrong with you. Overcome with a cold shudder, accompanied by fluttering palpitations, palms sweaty and confusion. Utter confusion. You can’t move. But hold on, 5 minutes ago you were fine? But now, now you can’t move. You can’t get up. There is a heavy invisible burden upon you. If you do attempt to get up, what if you fall? What if everyone around you bursts out laughing at you falling? 

Silly silly silly intruding thoughts enter your mind at this point and you wonder if it will ever stop. Until you get up, walk for a bit and realise you will be ok. That was it. Your first panic attack. 

The problem is, sometimes we don’t realise we are having one – or worse still we don’t know why they happen. I am referring specifically to panic disorder, whereby sufferers will have intense panic attacks. 

Unfortunately there is no fast cure to ‘healing’ these episodes. But you can overcome it, I managed last year to completely get rid of them. Unfortunately recently I have been under a lot of stress and they have returned to rear their ugly head. Here are my top tips on controlling your anxiety / panic attacks; 

1. Cut off the source of the problem

If you can pinpoint the stress or issue which causes the panic attacks you have a very good chance of ending them. You need to cut it out, whatever it may be. If this is near impossible, for example if your job is stressing you out and you can’t afford to leave. Perhaps discuss with your manager working less hours or moving to another department. You need to home in and pinpoint what aspect of the job is stressing you and causing these episodes. 

2. Coping mechanisms  

Along the way in this intense journey, there are a few mechanisms you can use to aid your recovery and help yourself. 

If you have a panic attack at night and your brain is doing overtime, thus resulting in not being able to sleep. I would suggest investing in some ear plugs, putting relaxing music on YouTube and practising breathing exercises. These techniques, in particular the breathing exercises will really help slow down the palpitations and regulate breathing. (This can be applied any time of day). 

If you have one during the day and you are occupied, you can try the breathing exercises. Or splashing your face with cold water, maybe leaving the room and taking 5 minutes to calm down. It’s jusg about finding out what works for you as an individual, we all suffer for different reason in different ways. 

Last but not least, keep things in perspective. Remember you haven’t always had this disorder, more than likely an event has triggered it. Which means, there is light at the end of the tunnel and you can overcome it. It’s just going to take a lot of mental strength and determination. You got this! 

Is affordable make up a false economy or smart shopping?

I’m going to use Rimmels wake me up concealer as the prime example to this much needed debate. (And it is a bloody good concealer by the way, just putting it out there). 

At £5.49 it’s undeniably cheap, yet gives medium – good coverage. However what I have found in the long term is that the cheaper concealers are less thick (in the sense of giving a full coverage not a cakey texture). This means they run out twice as fast as the more expensive brands; I’d say using the Rimmel concealer on a daily basis it could last you perhaps 2-3 months. 

Naturally if you have to keep replacing the product, surely it becomes no longer quite as cheap as you anticipated? In comparison to (just for example sake), Urban Decays naked concealer – which was my previous concealer of choice. Weighing in at £19, but lasting between 7-8 months with everyday use. 

It does make you question whether actually buying cheaper make up does save you money in the long run? The quality is lesser, meaning that you use more product per application, and could potentially spend more or the same amount over longer periods? 

Here’s my advice to get the best bang for your buck; 

Take into consideration regularity of use. For example if you could manage to make the Rimmel concealer last 6 months, of course £11 a year on concealer is an absolute bargain – and cheaper than a majority of high end products. However if you know you use products quite excessively it may be worth investing in a slightly more expensive product, maybe midrange which will last you for most of the year (if you have cheaper ones laying around use them up in the meantime). 

I’m all for shopping smart and not just throwing away money. These are the questions you need to be asking yourself when make up shopping: 

 What products do I already own that are similar? 

Do I actually need this or am I buying it for the sake of it? 

Is this too expensive for what it is – am I paying for a brand name? 

Have I seen a good dupe for this product which will save me money? 

How often will I use the product / can I justify buying it? 

Just being generally more conscious of your consumption patterns and what you currently have in stock at home could help you save a lot of money!
