The best beauty products for our recent heatwave

product review

I don’t know about you guys but this heat is too much for me. I feel like I am slowly melting, my inner core is melting. Everything is melting. But one thing that doesn’t need to have a meltdown is your beauty routine.

Just recently I’ve been reviewing a lot of skincare products for ReallyRee, and coincidentally many of them have been natural products. I am fast becoming an advocate for nature. So the latest is Urban Veda and I just thought this purifying skin wash and polish will be perfect in this weather. The tee tree and mint makes them ultra refreshing, and they decongest the skin.

I also love the Hawaiian tropic dry oil, it really makes me feel like it helps accelerate the tanning process (although the spf deffo isn’t high enough for this weather, I tend to layer this with sun cream). It’s so important to remember to wear protection – just because we’re in England doesn’t mean we won’t burn. This oil is relative cheap and moisturising, plus it smells like coconut & guava!

Carmex has always been one of my faves when it comes to lipcare, I suffer from chapped lips and the hot weather can make this worse. Their lip balms are so affordable and seem to last forever. I don’t think I’ve ever finished a carmex pot?

Make sure if you wear any make up or lip balms that they also contain spf. Burned swollen lips will not be attractive.**(Not a cheap alternative to lip fillers)**

Happy tanning guys!

Primark mermaid glow highlighter – a cult product for £3.50

product review

I urge you one and all to stop wasting your money on expensive highlighters! I know the struggle; they look so attractive and shiny, but this highlighter from Primark ticks all the boxes. It ensures that you look like a real life mermaid, if ever there was one!

Full review

Firstly, it is only £3.50, so not really a huge investment. The highlighter also comes in other colours, should you not prefer a shiny white mermaid metallic look.

It is ultra pigmented! In comparison to my Urban Decay highlighter (I have the powder highlighter in ‘Sin’), I can’t say there is much difference in quality. The Primark highlighter has longevity, I have been wearing it for around two weeks now; and everyday it stays put for the entire day. I know this because on my way home from work, I happened to just catch my reflection in glass and my cheeks were shining to the high heavens. Of course I smiled to myself.

The next time you visit Primark be sure to grab one of these – if there’s any left. Sure, the packaging is rather basic maybe compared to more expensive highlighters. But you know what, I like it. It’s simplistic and it does the job, pretty darn well may I add.

[Perhaps not the best pic to show off the highlight, but it’s there glowing away if you look close enough]
[…Andddd swatch 😍, you can really see the high pigmentation here]

How to (try to) control your anxiety

top tips

At first you don’t even realise what is wrong with you. Overcome with a cold shudder, accompanied by fluttering palpitations, palms sweaty and confusion. Utter confusion. You can’t move. But hold on, 5 minutes ago you were fine? But now, now you can’t move. You can’t get up. There is a heavy invisible burden upon you. If you do attempt to get up, what if you fall? What if everyone around you bursts out laughing at you falling?

Silly silly silly intruding thoughts enter your mind at this point and you wonder if it will ever stop. Until you get up, walk for a bit and realise you will be ok. That was it. Your first panic attack.

The problem is, sometimes we don’t realise we are having one – or worse still we don’t know why they happen. I am referring specifically to panic disorder, whereby sufferers will have intense panic attacks.

Unfortunately there is no fast cure to ‘healing’ these episodes. But you can overcome it, I managed last year to completely get rid of them. Unfortunately recently I have been under a lot of stress and they have returned to rear their ugly head. Here are my top tips on controlling your anxiety / panic attacks;

1. Cut off the source of the problem

If you can pinpoint the stress or issue which causes the panic attacks you have a very good chance of ending them. You need to cut it out, whatever it may be. If this is near impossible, for example if your job is stressing you out and you can’t afford to leave. Perhaps discuss with your manager working less hours or moving to another department. You need to home in and pinpoint what aspect of the job is stressing you and causing these episodes.

2. Coping mechanisms

Along the way in this intense journey, there are a few mechanisms you can use to aid your recovery and help yourself.

If you have a panic attack at night and your brain is doing overtime, thus resulting in not being able to sleep. I would suggest investing in some ear plugs, putting relaxing music on YouTube and practising breathing exercises. These techniques, in particular the breathing exercises will really help slow down the palpitations and regulate breathing. (This can be applied any time of day).

If you have one during the day and you are occupied, you can try the breathing exercises. Or splashing your face with cold water, maybe leaving the room and taking 5 minutes to calm down. It’s jusg about finding out what works for you as an individual, we all suffer for different reason in different ways.

Last but not least, keep things in perspective. Remember you haven’t always had this disorder, more than likely an event has triggered it. Which means, there is light at the end of the tunnel and you can overcome it. It’s just going to take a lot of mental strength and determination. You got this!

Five fun things you can do in London for under £20

top tips

Let’s face it; as Londoners we moan insistently about the god awful weather, the ridiculous queues everywhere you go (even in toilets), and we moan at how bloody (ever increasingly) expensive everything is! BUT did you know there are a lot of things to do in London that are cheap, entertaining and full of culture.

I’ve been mentally compiling this list for a while as I’ve been on a mission to save money. So here are my hidden gems:

1. The Tate Modern gallery

Many of the exhibitions here are free, and often they offer interactive workshops where you can network with industry professionals. And get involved first hand with the art. (I even got to make a key chain for myself and keep it for free).

They have some amazing exhibitions which are culturally rich and diverse.

Expenses for the day:

Museum entry – free

Food – You need to be organised and prepare a packed lunch beforehand, this way you spend zero on food

Travel, train fare to the museum return – £7

That leaves you with a £13 budget to get something from the gift store! Or save the change?

2. Picnic at Holland Park

I mean this one is obviously weather permitting. But definetly on a warm(ish) day, this park is lovely to sit have a picnic and a good old chinwag.

The park itself is absolutely stunning and provides the perfect backdrop for an Instagram worthy photoshoot 💁🏼

Expenses for the day:

Return travel for the day – £7

Food for picnic – £7

Leaving you with £6 spare – winning

3. Visit bagel bake @ brick lane

What do I say in Defense of the shoreditch hipsters ? If you can’t beat em, join em!

THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST BAGEL PLACE EVER

Mouth watering salted beef roll with juicy gherkins, Source: Google Images

You have to try their salted beef bagel they are infamous.

Plus when you arrive in shoreditch there is usually some sort of free entertainment…… believe me you’ll make a day of it!

Expenses for the day:

Travel return – £7

Salted beef bagel – £3.70

4. Treat yourself

Why not get a massage and pamper yourself? You work hard you deserve it. And you can still do this on a tight budget.

Groupon often have deals on massages, I have found one based in London, which includes a 15 minute chair massage, eyebrow & upper lip threading for just £9

Amazing value.

Expenses for the day:

Massage – £9

Travel return – £7

Lunch – £4 (Tesco meal deal/optional)

5. Go and see Shakespeare at the theatre

Too expensive?! Never say never. At the young vic in Waterloo tickets start at just £10

You can be cultural and cheap if you try hard enough!

Expenses for the day:

Ticket – £10

Travel – £3 (going to have to bus it this time as the budget is tight)

Food – £7 (opt to find a local kebab shop after the show is finished)
Enjoy London and enjoy saving!

Simply the best

product review

I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. Blusher is one of those items which you use daily. But when it starts to break up and crumble into the distance and you are forced to buy another. It’s almost like a chore? No-one enjoys buying blusher. It’s like, will they still sell this shade? Do I have to spend £15 on blusher? Can’t I just use a pink eyeshadow instead?

But blusher actually completes your look, and if applied correctly can also be used for contouring. So take blusher for granted no more people.

On one of my silly splurges (they seem to happen only too often), I purchased Charlotte Tilburys cheek to chic blusher in ‘love is the drug’. Now, at £30 a pop you may have thought I’ve lost my marbles. But, it’s soooooo pretty – the packaging alone convinced me to buy it.

Here are three simple reasons why you need this blusher in your life right now:

1. Longevity

At first I hated the hell out of this product, and I really thought I had wasted my money. I was even tempted to write the most rubbish, sarcastic review of it. But I soon realised, you have to know how to apply it. It’s very very VERY concentrated and pigmented, and this means if you get a little brush happy with your blusher brush. You will look like a clown. (Maybe not as bad as the ones that have been hiding in bushes with knives, but nevertheless quite clownified). The trick is to apply sparingly and dust excess blusher off of the brush before applying to your cheeks. The upside of this is that it lasts months upon months. I have had mine 4 months already, and it’s still like new. Brilliant!

2. Don’t judge a book by its cover

Well I definetly judged this blusher by its cover, and boyyyy was I right to do so. It looks so stunning, it comes with a lovely compact mirror – great for touch ups. A real compliment to your dressing table. I feel like a real life princess using this blusher 💅🏻

3. Multi purpose

Believe it or not this blusher is multi purpose. Firstly, it has two shades of blusher – which can be used for contouring. Secondly it is so pigmented that it can also be used as an eyeshadow (both shades). You can even add it to Vaseline on your lips for a rosy glow. The compact mirror is also (as mentioned above) handy to keep in your bag for hourly touch ups (maybe not hourly I’m not that vain am I??)

So, considering it’s nearly… erm well hump day. Why not treat yourself?

Underrated: what they didn’t tell you about graduation

top tips

If your university was anything like mine you won’t receive any practical information on your graduation until about a week before you attend. Doesn’t matter really; it’s only one of the most important events for the duration of your 3 years (or longer ?) at university.

In hindsight I’m so happy I didn’t decide to skip graduation based on the fact that getting up on stage in front of hundreds of people, made me want to puke in my mouth & gauge my eyes out with a fork. No, I soldiered on. I made it! (By about 5 minutes actually, because I spent the whole morning curling my hair – have to look good for graduation).

But honestly they gave us hardly any training for such an important event.

Here’s the basics you need to know to survive:

1. Charge it up

If, like me, you are a twenty something who thinks they are a fourty something and hasn’t actually entered the 21st century fully – and uses their phone to photograph everything. Prepare to lose your phone. My battery went half way through the ceremony and I could’ve cried!!!!! One of the most memorable days of your life. You need photos. Even if you look awful, purely for the memory of the day. Make sure you charge your phone fully before leaving your house, portable chargers are mandatory.

2. Regal dressing

Although there aren’t strict guidelines about what you should wear to the event (university dependant) – it should be formal and classy in my opinion. Now let’s talk about shoes girls. Just to inform you the walk on the stage, although it may, in reality only last the whole of 40 seconds. These 40 seconds will feel like a year of your life – and it’s quite a distance. And there’s stairs. Yes. Stairs at either end….please wear shoes you can walk in. You do not want to end up even tripping up slightly.

3. Star struck

Before the event you won’t get any notification of who will attend, but be prepared to be entertained by some celebrity relevant to your course. This makes the ceremony much more enjoyable – even more reason to attend.

4. Lengthy business

No one prepares you for how longgggg the ceremony is. Every individual from your whole year will go on stage and be personally congratulated. You will suffer clap ache (hands aching from strenuous hours of clapping). Yes it is a thing. My dear mother came up with a winning strategy for such a dilemma: ‘I started to ration my claps to two per person’. You’ll thank me in the long run.

5. Compose yourself

Erm. So the free prosecco is very very tempting. Why not? You’ve had a challenging 3 years. Full of sleepless nights, caffeine induced panics completing academic essays a night before they are due. Stressing over Harvard referencing and technical issues with turn it in. Yes we’ve all been there. So take the prosecco – but be careful. There’s an awful lot of free alcohol. Do not get carried away and embarass yourself in front of your fellow colleagues, family or lecturers. (In my case my mum did that all by herself, I sobered up watching over her – switching roles literally – and trust me she is a real life Delboy trotter. The thought of her coming out with her brash cockney remarks , I sobered up very quickly)

6. Built for comfort not speed

You will get strangely attached to your gown and cap. Like weirdly attached. Like I did not want to give it back whatsoever. It’s so comfortable. So regal. So classy. Mmmmmmm.

7. Ambience

The atmosphere generally on the day is lovely. Everyone is happy, relieved and excited for future endeavours. So, now that you are prepared fully for a tiresome, yet enjoyable, yet emotional day. Enjoy!!! (The free prosecco is a killer)
