Why staying in is the new going out

For me, staying in at the weekend is a sensible choice. I don’t mean being a total social recluse – but choosing to stay in once in a while rather than going ‘out out’. You know, wasting ridiculous amounts of money in pretentious clubs and bars, surrounded by pretentious people you pretend to like. Don’t get me wrong, you can have a great night out partying when you are celebrating an ocassion. Or attending an actual event. But for me, long gone are the teenage days when I got shit faced for no reason; or to drown my sorrows. Because you know what, getting drunk to blur out your dull reality does not work. And quite often it’s an expensive mistake. Both emotionally and on your pocket. 

I am approaching 25 this October; I actually can’t think of anything better than chilling with a close friend, watching a horror movie with a night filled full of carbs. 


We are part of a millennial generation whom can’t afford cars. We can’t afford to leave our parental homes. I can’t understand what everyone is celebrating every weekend? 

Sure it’s great to let your hair down and relax. And everybody has different ways of doing so, I get that. However, we work damn hard for our money. And with the current economic climate, unless you happen to be in a very generously paid job. If you are young, living at home, or even alone… chances are you are struggling financially like the rest of us. So don’t go out every weekend getting drunk because you feel it’s the socially normal thing to do. Think for yourself. Do you really want to waste over £100 every Saturday night? You could save up and do something much more productive, without the hangover. 

So next weekend, or maybe even the weekend after. Consider this: staying in with a friend, getting some awesome carby snacks and watching a movie. I guarantee the entire night will cost you under £15. Bargain! 

Of course you can’t stay in watching films every weekend. But there are cheap alternative days / nights out; 

1. Find a gem of a restaurant 

Once I discovered Tortilla, which is basically the subway heaven of Burritos -my life changed. All this for under a tenner. You need to find your Tortilla, and it can be your go to restaurant every time you are trying to save money. 2. Free events 

Time out is great for advertising free events around London, or cheap nights out. They also advertise when restaurants do free food or giveaways. Great if you want a free lunch / dinner. 

3. Find your interests, attend events 

We are lucky enough to have some of the best museums and events in the world in London. And I feel young people don’t exploit this fact enough. Many of them are free to enter, you can spend your weekend exploring cultural and historical facts. Who knows, you may awaken a new hobby or interest.

Let’s face it; as Londoners we moan insistently about the god awful weather, the ridiculous queues everywhere you go (even in toilets), and we moan at how bloody (ever increasingly) expensive everything is! BUT did you know there are a lot of things to do in London that are cheap, entertaining and full of culture. 

I’ve been mentally compiling this list for a while as I’ve been on a mission to save money. So here are my hidden gems: 

1. The Tate Modern gallery 

Many of the exhibitions here are free, and often they offer interactive workshops where you can network with industry professionals. And get involved first hand with the art. (I even got to make a key chain for myself and keep it for free). 

They have some amazing exhibitions which are culturally rich and diverse. 

Expenses for the day: 

Museum entry – free 

Food – You need to be organised and prepare a packed lunch beforehand, this way you spend zero on food 

Travel, train fare to the museum return – £7 

That leaves you with a £13 budget to get something from the gift store! Or save the change? 

2. Picnic at Holland Park 

I mean this one is obviously weather permitting. But definetly on a warm(ish) day, this park is lovely to sit have a picnic and a good old chinwag. 

The park itself is absolutely stunning and provides the perfect backdrop for an Instagram worthy photoshoot 💁🏼 

Expenses for the day: 

Return travel for the day – £7 

Food for picnic – £7 

Leaving you with £6 spare – winning 

3. Visit bagel bake @ brick lane 

What do I say in Defense of the shoreditch hipsters ? If you can’t beat em, join em!

You have to try their salted beef bagel they are infamous. 

Plus when you arrive in shoreditch there is usually some sort of free entertainment…… believe me you’ll make a day of it!

4. Treat yourself 

Why not get a massage and pamper yourself? You work hard you deserve it. And you can still do this on a tight budget. 

Groupon often have deals on massages, I have found one based in London, which includes a 15 minute chair massage, eyebrow & upper lip threading for just £9

5. Go and see Shakespeare at the theatre

Too expensive?! Never say never. At the young vic in Waterloo tickets start at just £10 

You can be cultural and cheap if you try hard enough!

Travel – £3 (going to have to bus it this time as the budget is tight) 

Food – £7 (opt to find a local kebab shop after the show is finished)

Overrated: trekking to pretentious restaurants on your birthday

I really don’t want to be the Scrooge of birthdays.. but it has to be said that in my latter years I really cba with my birthday. 

I mean yes, I want to celebrate it with those who are close to me. But do I want to spend £50 on uber taxis (in a silly Toyota Prius may I add, huff); sit in a wanky restaurant surrounded by pretentious hipsters, whilst paying another £35 for a mediocre steak & sipping a pornstar martini which costs more than hiring an actual real life porn star? Nope. Going out to expensive joints is not for me anymore. 

Here are my top tips to enjoying special occasions without the overrated venues; 

1. Localise 

I’m pretty sure wherever you live you have a favourite restaurant. It’s not going to cost you hardly anything to travel to, you know you like the food. It’s a safe option, but sometimes safe is good. Safe is really good, and helpful to save money. 

2. Travel light 

As much as you want to look like a sass queen on your birthday, sometimes getting the tube is a lot cheaper and less time consuming than sitting in traffic. What you can do is bring flats in your bag (very flat flats), and just wear your stunner shoes for pics & inside the actual venue. 

3. Review that ish 

I wish in hindsight that I had read reviews on the over priced restaurant I attended for my birthday this weekend just gone. (Stk). It would have helped me to make a better informed decision. Always always read reviews, but take them with a pinch of salt. Of course every business / establishment gets fussy customers who just complain for the sake of it. But if the majority are saying negative remarks then take notice. 

4. Shop smart

Don’t even waste hundreds on your outfit just because you are going somewhere expensive. Who is going to know your dress was £13 in the missguided sale? As long as you slay who cares? 
But most of all enjoy!

Feeling fruitful: 5 easy steps to improve your diet

”I’m not on a diet, I’m just trying to be healthier…”

This has been my (sad) life mantra for about the last year; safe to say alot of the time I fail miserably at it. But, there are some simple ways of improving your diet and general health – that I have discovered and reluctantly taken on board. Which can be implemented fairly easily, and don’t cost bundles either.

1). Zero tolerance policy on caffeine

If, like me, your lifestyle is a hectic re-enactment of Wolf on Wall Street; and you really believe you couldn’t survive daily work life without the (legal) drugs. You can do it.

Yes caffeine is a drug, a highly addictive one at that. You don’t need coffee. That boost of energy it gives you can be obtained from other drinks. Herbal teas are brilliant for detoxing, and you can find some lovely flavours. My current fave is organic green tea with manuka honey, from Heath & Heather, 20 tea bags for £2.49. Or switch your morning coffee for coconut water – much healthier and gives you a natural boost. If you feel you can’t go cold turkey right away try de-caf, or using brown sugar instead of white (or better still no sugar at all).

2). Skip the sugar

It is difficult to avoid sugar, it’s in almost everything we consume. But what you can do is avoid adding extra sugar to food (e.g on your cereal). And in terms of snacking and desserts – look for sugar free alternatives, or items with much less sugar.

For example, if you usually have a chocolate bar everyday with your lunch; why not swap that with a banana? Or nuts?

My top low sugar snacks are:

  • Nuts/seeds (can be added into fruit bowls or eaten alone)
  • Rice cakes – savoury or sweet
  • Belvita biscuits
  • Fruit (which has natural sugar, so not too much of this either)
  • Dark chocolate as a treat – only a few squares
  • Sugar free sweets – available from Holland & Baratt

3). Fizzy pop out the window

One can of coca cola contains 7 cubes of sugar. It is disgusting! Whether we like it or not the fizzy drinks we buy are packed full of sugar, just imagine what that is doing to our teeth (believe me root canal ain’t pretty, or cheap, IT’S TRAUMATISING) – and the insides of our bodies.

If you can’t give up totally try to stick to diet versions, or sugar-free fizzy drinks. Which actually taste just as sweet.

Tasty alternatives to fizzy drinks include:

  • Home-made smoothies
  • Water, water and more water
  • Soya milkshakes (banana one is soooo yum)
  • Sugar-free squash with carbonated mineral water
  • Fruit infused water (marinate the night before for ultimate flavour)
  • Coconut water

Just take into consideration the fact that fruit has alot of natural sugars also, so eat fruit in moderation too. These natural sugars in excess can be harmful to teeth. Ideally, stick to drinking water, and have other drinks as a treat.

4). How to avoid fat

We’ve talked about sugar intake regarding snacks, desserts and drinks. What about main meals though? How do you avoid processed junk and fat?

One major trick is to be organised. Instead of being out, getting hangry and grabbing a Big Mac because it’s convenient – if you already made a packed lunch the night before this wouldn’t happen.

But, of course, you won’t eat packed lunches everyday. If eating out with friends – or preparing meals at home,

Stick to these top tips:

  • Stick to grilled meat, rather than fried
  • Increase your Omega-3 intake, fish is very good for you
  • Try to eat healthier carbs; sweet potato, wholemeal bread/rice and Ryvita
  • Stock up on fresh veg and do not overcook
  • If you do occasionally treat yourself to something ‘naughty’, try to limit portion amount

5). No deprivation

No-one in this entire world is ever going to be motivated to do anything if they constantly feel deprived. It is difficult to eat healthier, especially with so many temptations surrounding us. The trick is to not deprive yourself. For example if you love pizza, why not try to make a fresh one yourself? Or search for a weight watchers one which is low calorie? OR, treat yourself to one maybe once a week, on the weekend, and eat healthily during the week. Then you have something to look forward to – and eventually you may not even crave it any more; you might find healthier meals which you prefer.
