Best of budget: Aldi’s caviar cream review

product review

This little baby here, costing a mere £6.99 from popular budget supermarket Aldi is a real game changer. The caviar cream has already been compared as a dupe for La Prairies skin caviar luxe cream, which is a staggering £299.95 (prices may vary slightly depending on website retailer).

How does the Aldi version perform?

I have been using the cream daily for around 1 month. It has improved the radiance of my skin, and the moisturisation has longevity.

Moreover, according to scientific studies the cream decreases the appearance of wrinkle depth by up to 35% and has a 24 hour moisturising effect.

The cream has a luxuriant feel. It’s thick without being cloggy (think I just invented a word there, but it sounds great if you ask me?). It contains an spf, so you don’t need a seperately product to protect against sun damage. And the packaging also scream elegance and class.

Let’s talk ingredients

Surely if the La Prairie version is so much more expensive, it must contain exclusive ingredients right?! RIGHT?

Actually, not really. Both the creams contain algae extract and caviar extract.

The caviar extract is what gives skin an anti aging boost

The algae extract is said to provide hydration

The La Prairie cream does contain a few ingredients which the Aldi version does not. Gold extract, horsetail extract, and ginseng root extract. However gold extract is not scientifically proven to improve skins elasticity – so this could be just another marketing trick for the product to appeal more luxurious. And the horsetail extract is irritating to some skin types, so better left out.

Overall the creams are completely on par which it comes to quality of ingredients.

I have to ask myself, why is the skincare industry so behind with scientific ingredients? Why do brands like la prairie charge the earth for ingredients which can be found in a cream that costs £6.99?

Before investing in luxury skincare, analyse the ingredients and the budget market. Because throwing away good money is pure idiocy!

Mary Kay’s believe + wonder collection + gel semi-shine lipsticks review

product review

On Wednesdays we wear pink 💅🏻

I’m so excited about Mary Kay’s new collection, the believe and wonder collection is based around inspiring positivity. What could be better than sweet pink products and positivity!?

They are a new collection of bath and body items, each collection contains a shower gel, body lotion and fragrance mist. I’ve got the paint the sky collection, they smell insanely sweet (which I love, all my go to fragrances are sickly sweet). There are notes of vanilla, velvet musk and pink grapefruit which provides a refreshing sweet smell perfect for summer. Because, in England we can’t guarantee the weather – but at least we can smell summery!

Instantaneously I have been reviewing their new lipstick range, gel semi-shine lipsticks. I have been using a nude and red shade (perfect for me because I’m way too into my comfort zone to branch out to any other colours). Also perfect for me because my lips get insanely dry using matte lipsticks, it literally drives me insane on a daily basis. Most of the time my exterior looks normal, in my mind my lips feel like an actual sand pit. It’s hard being me.

Gel has long been discovered for nails – but not so much for lips. So when I discovered these gel lipsticks I could not wait to try them out.

Swatches of ‘Naturally Buff’ & ‘Red Smoulder’

These lipsticks are legit my new go to. Whilst they maintain colour throughout the day – they are moisturising without being overly glossy. You don’t want to look like a 90’s rendition of Lil Kim after all…

These amazing lipsticks are available in 12 shades! Get yours now. 💋💅🏻💋💅🏻

NYX beauty school dropout palette review and swatches

product review

Much like every make up obsessor I often sit and think which products I need next. Like, of course I NEED a new eyeshadow pallet to add to my already huge collection of about 20. Pssssh. My justification was that I decided to branch out to bright, pigmented colours. I wanted one palette with every colour – so that when I’m getting ready I don’t need to have a gazillion palettes surrounding me. It just gets messy and confusing. On my quest to find the perfect palette I came across NYX’ website. NYX is both amazing quality, and great prices.

The beauty school drop out palette also has a variety of blushes and lip colours. It’s currently on sale for £22.50 which is an absolute steal!

From the swatches you can see how pigmented the eyeshadow colours are; fortunately for a larger palette the quality of the eyeshadows has not been compromised. The only problem is choosing which shade to use because there’s just so much choice and I’m so goddamn indecisive. Not to mention scared of leaving my comfort zone. Buying this was a real step outside my ordinary box, and I’m so grateful that I did that. If you never take chances in life you won’t ever discover anything new.

For the initial use I decided to experiment and go for a pink smoky eye, it was my first attempt to use any eyeshadow colours apart from nudes and blacks (nudes and black are life though) .

In conclusion I found the eyeshadows a great pleasure to use. It’s like being a candid kid at the candy shop, waiting to apprehensively, excitedly chose your pick n mix sweets 😍

One tip I would suggest is to spritz your eyeshadow brush with setting spray and then apply. Gives an even more pigmented than usual colour, you will look like a walking rainbow. 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
Have a great Sunday guys!

How to create aesthetic flatlays on a budget

top tips

Flatlays have become the epitomisation of every lifestyle blogger on Instagram. I have gone to extreme lengths to create beautiful configurations; butchering my parents garden to find pretty petals, taking the same picture (but ever so slightly different) 500 times, waking up extra early in order to catch that sunrise glow, perfect lighting for my pictures. If you take blogging seriously, you need good content. Flatlays are aesthetic af, and can aid your brand image. They create a consistent theme throughout your Instagram. However you don’t need to spend a lot of money in order to create beautiful flatlays…

I went shopping this weekend specifically for flatlay items – I purchased all the above items for £10. Quite unbelievable. Everything pictured is from Primark, Wilkinsons and Poundstretcher.
Here’s how to create great flatlays on a tight budget;

1. The white rug

Almost every blogger has a white sheepskin rug that they quite often use as backgrounds for their flatlays / pics. You can purchase a faux one from eBay for around £8. It’s a great cheap background especially for beauty products.

2. Get creative with what you already have

Use old magazines to create collages, use make up to create interesting backgrounds. Anything you have at home already could be used for pictures, so hunt around and create a box for all flatlay items. Also spending time being creative can be therapeutic. Especially for anyone suffering with anxiety or panic attacks. The creativity will relax you, and inspire further creativity.

3. Think outside the box

For example I reviewed a natural range for http://www.reallyree.com, consisting of a bath/body oil, body scrub & moisturiser. Now because the specific brand [Elemental Herbology], pride themselves on using natural, healing ingredients. I thought the images should reflect this, so I took some really natural shots in my garden of the products placed in the dirt, grass and flowers. Nature is so beautiful – and absolutely free to use in images!

4. Establish a theme

Write down 5 key colours that you want to use in all your flatlays. This will create consistency, and means you can search for items you already own that fit the theme.

5. Shop smart

If, like me, you start to run out of ideas and you decide to shop for flatlay items; be sure to shop around. Budget stores like Primark and Wilkinsons (plus more) have great homeware and stationery sections. Charity shops and car boot sales will also have great bargains.

Enjoy, and happy flatlaying girls!

Primark mermaid glow highlighter – a cult product for £3.50

product review

I urge you one and all to stop wasting your money on expensive highlighters! I know the struggle; they look so attractive and shiny, but this highlighter from Primark ticks all the boxes. It ensures that you look like a real life mermaid, if ever there was one!

Full review

Firstly, it is only £3.50, so not really a huge investment. The highlighter also comes in other colours, should you not prefer a shiny white mermaid metallic look.

It is ultra pigmented! In comparison to my Urban Decay highlighter (I have the powder highlighter in ‘Sin’), I can’t say there is much difference in quality. The Primark highlighter has longevity, I have been wearing it for around two weeks now; and everyday it stays put for the entire day. I know this because on my way home from work, I happened to just catch my reflection in glass and my cheeks were shining to the high heavens. Of course I smiled to myself.

The next time you visit Primark be sure to grab one of these – if there’s any left. Sure, the packaging is rather basic maybe compared to more expensive highlighters. But you know what, I like it. It’s simplistic and it does the job, pretty darn well may I add.

[Perhaps not the best pic to show off the highlight, but it’s there glowing away if you look close enough]
[…Andddd swatch 😍, you can really see the high pigmentation here]

A new classic? Chanel No 5 L’eau: a review

product review

The original Chanel No 5 has never been a favourite of mine. Infact, to put it rather bluntly – it reminds me of an old school m’am. A haggered bitter old woman, whose nose was always held up high as if where she existed there was better air to breathe.

It’s safe to say, the classic Chanel scents are not my cup of tea. I find them rather old fashioned (and not in a good way), and way too flowery.

It’s uncanny because just last year I criticised Chanel for being complacent in product design, and suggested they reinvent some of their classic products, adding in a modern twist.

So as soon as I saw that they had relaunched a new version of No 5; I could not wait to try it for myself.

It is ridiculously hard to judge this perfume. The notes of the classic No 5 are so over powering as you first spray, and when the perfume dries you get a lighter fresher smell. Which, by the way, is divine. The after smell is great.

I found myself sniffing at myself all day whilst wearing it. And this is usually a good sign. This usually means my nostrils are partial to whatever perfume I am wearing. So on that front it was a winner.

I just can’t quite get over the initial smell, and how it repulsed me. And then shortly after I fell in love? Perhaps the strangest relationship with a perfume ever.

I predict this perfume will be one of the new classics. It’s light, refreshing & who doesn’t love a reinvented classic? It’s what Chanel does best, after all.

Overall rating:

7.5/10

Recognition: Liebster award 2016

award

So I’ve heard of this award before – but I honestly never thought I would ever be nominated. As cliché as it sounds, I sometimes even wonder if anyone reads my blog posts?

Like who even are my audience? My cat, my mother and a few random friends who make the effort to read my rushed blog posts (it’s kinda difficult to keep up with working 60 hour weeks).

It feels great to get recognition for what I love doing. Writing is a skill, and it’s a passion. For me it’s what I’ve always loved doing.
