Primark mermaid glow highlighter – a cult product for £3.50

product review

I urge you one and all to stop wasting your money on expensive highlighters! I know the struggle; they look so attractive and shiny, but this highlighter from Primark ticks all the boxes. It ensures that you look like a real life mermaid, if ever there was one!

Full review

Firstly, it is only £3.50, so not really a huge investment. The highlighter also comes in other colours, should you not prefer a shiny white mermaid metallic look.

It is ultra pigmented! In comparison to my Urban Decay highlighter (I have the powder highlighter in ‘Sin’), I can’t say there is much difference in quality. The Primark highlighter has longevity, I have been wearing it for around two weeks now; and everyday it stays put for the entire day. I know this because on my way home from work, I happened to just catch my reflection in glass and my cheeks were shining to the high heavens. Of course I smiled to myself.

The next time you visit Primark be sure to grab one of these – if there’s any left. Sure, the packaging is rather basic maybe compared to more expensive highlighters. But you know what, I like it. It’s simplistic and it does the job, pretty darn well may I add.

[Perhaps not the best pic to show off the highlight, but it’s there glowing away if you look close enough]
[…Andddd swatch 😍, you can really see the high pigmentation here]

A new classic? Chanel No 5 L’eau: a review

product review

The original Chanel No 5 has never been a favourite of mine. Infact, to put it rather bluntly – it reminds me of an old school m’am. A haggered bitter old woman, whose nose was always held up high as if where she existed there was better air to breathe.

It’s safe to say, the classic Chanel scents are not my cup of tea. I find them rather old fashioned (and not in a good way), and way too flowery.

It’s uncanny because just last year I criticised Chanel for being complacent in product design, and suggested they reinvent some of their classic products, adding in a modern twist.

So as soon as I saw that they had relaunched a new version of No 5; I could not wait to try it for myself.

It is ridiculously hard to judge this perfume. The notes of the classic No 5 are so over powering as you first spray, and when the perfume dries you get a lighter fresher smell. Which, by the way, is divine. The after smell is great.

I found myself sniffing at myself all day whilst wearing it. And this is usually a good sign. This usually means my nostrils are partial to whatever perfume I am wearing. So on that front it was a winner.

I just can’t quite get over the initial smell, and how it repulsed me. And then shortly after I fell in love? Perhaps the strangest relationship with a perfume ever.

I predict this perfume will be one of the new classics. It’s light, refreshing & who doesn’t love a reinvented classic? It’s what Chanel does best, after all.

Overall rating:

7.5/10

Recognition: Liebster award 2016

award

So I’ve heard of this award before – but I honestly never thought I would ever be nominated. As cliché as it sounds, I sometimes even wonder if anyone reads my blog posts?

Like who even are my audience? My cat, my mother and a few random friends who make the effort to read my rushed blog posts (it’s kinda difficult to keep up with working 60 hour weeks).

It feels great to get recognition for what I love doing. Writing is a skill, and it’s a passion. For me it’s what I’ve always loved doing.

Just wanted to thank ”Bluish Taka” for nominating me, go follow: https://moreorlessbluish.wordpress.com/

The miracle product you never knew you needed until now

As shown, the prep spray provides the quintessential base for flawless make-up

A vitamin prep spray!?!? Like, what even is that?

We’ve all heard of Urban Decay’s legendary make-up setting spray; the setting spray of all facial sprays. Supposedly lasts through 12 hour sessions of sex, probably last even through WW3. Hey – no matter what is going on externally, our faces must always be flawless right. *Regina George moment right thurrrrrr*

Honestly speaking, since I have had this vitamin prep spray from UD – it has changed not only my make-up regime – but my life. You apply it before your daily moisturiser, and it’s like a breathe of fresh air onto your mush. It closes pores, reduces redness and imperfections; but also, it feels so bloody refreshing. Imagine the rejuvenating feeling of splashing ice cold Evian on your face first thing in the morning, BUT with added vitamins to enhance your skin, and perfectly prep it for your make-up. Flawless!

Everyone needs it. Now, what are you waiting for?

Beauty subscription boxes: are they worth it?

top tips

In hindsight, I wish I had read something like this before making the commitment to subscribe to a monthly beauty box (leaving isn’t an option, as they never return my e-mails, and on my account I opted out but continued to be billed every month). Most beauty boxes are around £13 per month, it doesn’t seem a staggering amount. However, that is still £156 a year that you could be saving – so it needs to be justifiable.

I thought I would give you the guys the much needed heads up; I will focus on Birchbox and Glossybox. Birchbox, I have finally terminated my subscription with – but Glossybox I am still using. I will weigh up the advantages and disadvantages, and give you a balanced conclusion.

Advantages of subscription beauty boxes

  • You are sent exclusive samples of new/alternative products which you could end up loving
  • It’s a great treat for yourself once a month, and not hugely expensive
  • If you love buying beauty and hair products, it stops you binge shopping as you are regularly sent top-ups
  • If you don’t like some of the products you are sent and they are an established brand i.e Benefit (a beauty box fave) – you can always sell the product on eBay and scrape some of your money back

Disadvantages of subscription beauty boxes

  • When trying to opt out (Birchbox) it would not let me cancel the subscription! This was very frustrating / only when I received a new card from my bank, it was cancelled as they hadn’t got access to my updated details
  • A lot of the time it seems you are sent products which can’t be shifted by brands – a cheap option to fill up the boxes
  • When you are sent a very good product – it’s usually in sample size, I understand they want to encourage users to buy the full product. However you are still providing them with regular money so you should be rewarded for that
  • Although you create your own personalised profile so that you are sent products which are suited to your individual needs; most of what is sent is generic / i.e I keep getting sent shampoo and I have bleached dry hair so I rarely wash my hair, these products are irrelevant for me. I think they should ask for feedback to improve that.

Overall conclusion

I would say overall that Glossybox is better value for money than Birchbox, simply because I love make-up and they always send good make-up in full size samples. I guess it comes down to what you are looking for, and preference. But I must admit on several occasions I was disappointed with my Birchbox, it seems to be hit and miss whether you get good products or not. I would recommend beauty subscription boxes for anyone who binge buys make-up and hair products, and toiletries – so that you are sent regular top-ups. Maybe subscribe for a few months until you have a build up of good products and then cancel it. Otherwise, don’t bother.

Dior poison girl: why you need this in your life asap

product review

As you all know I’m a terrible serial spender. And as soon as I saw the adverts for this perfume which had launched weeks ago on the continent; I had mentally brought it already, 100 times over.

When I realised it was now available in the UK I almost had a panic attack. I needed it like I need air. So, although I have a repair bill of £522 for my car (let’s not go into that) I still went and brought the 30ml for £45. Why? Because I’m blonde. But man does this perfume smell beautiful.

The verdict:

Hypnotic poison is my all time favourite perfume in the world. And I could never imagine anything better.

They’ve managed it! The new poison girl by Dior is just simply enchanting. First of all it’s so pretty, and the fragrance is wonderful. With notes of orange and vanilla it is a modern reinvention of a grand classic. It’s less heavy than hypnotic poison, and smells like nothing I have smelt before. The staying power is magic too – hours later and I can still smell it on my neck.

If you invest in anything this weekend, please make it this perfume because you will not regret it. Even if you will have to live off beans on toast for the next week like me.

Final score: 9/10

SuperDrug: the £10 challenge

make-up hauls

As we all know nowadays £10 is nothing. I mean, I remember the days I would casually saunter round my local convenience store and buy two Freddos, a Panda Pops (usually in ice cream and jelly flavour), a bag of mixed penny sweets – and still have change from £1. Oh how times have changed radically.

This weekend in SuperDrug I decided to see what I could buy with just a tenner. Surprisingly if you shop smart you can get a lot for little money. And there’s no need to skim on quality either.

Focusing on two brands both homegrown at SuperDrug, MUA and Make-up Revolution. MUA I have briefly mentioned before, as I have reviewed their amazing products. Make-up revolution, I am a complete rookie. Judging by their impeccably aesthetic stall – I was already sold on first impressions.

What did I buy?

1). The must-have eyeshadow palette

Make-up revolution eyeshadow palette in Redemption, Iconic 1, £4

Wow. For only £4 this palette is an absolute bargain. It comes with 12 shades (you can pick matte or shimmery palettes, in various shades), and the eye shadows are very pigmented. This is serious, serious competition for the high-brow cosmetic brands. I mean, I never want to pay more than £4 for a palette now I am aware I can purchase one this great for such little money. A real game changer.

2). The iconic eyebrow pencil

MUA eyebrow pencil in Blonde, £1

Believe me when I say I have searched high and low for a perfect eyebrow pencil. As much as I love my Chanel eyebrow pencil, for just £1 this has got to be worth a try. It’s extra long (excuse the pun) so should theoretically last longer through sharpening. It comes in various shades – it isn’t as pigmented as the more expensive brand eyebrow pencils. But, it’s decent and a lot better than other high street ones which are almost 9 times the price of this (a prime example is the Maybeilline one – DON’T EVER BUY THIS, EVER EVEN IN DESPERATION. It is like using my three year old nieces crayola crayons on my brows. Just no).

3). The highest highlighter

Make-up revolution Vivid baked highlighter in Peach lights, £3

This is perfect for me as I usually mix my highlighter with a pink blush, now I have a product which is 2 in 1. I also prefer powder highlighters – they are the easiest to apply in my opinion. This product is also highly pigmented – and comes in three shades. I’m sorry but if you don’t already have this in your life what the hell are you doing with your life???

4). The penultimate pink/nude lipstick

MUA lipstick in Tulip, £1

Just in time for spring, this pretty pink ticks all the boxes. This amazing £1 lipstick comes in a variety of appealing shades. It stays on throughout the day, and again, there is no lack of pigmentation.

Go on, treat yourself. After all – all that make-up and I only spent a tenner!
